Allergy Medicine and Weight Gain:

Allergies affect more then 35 million Americans every year. There are some treatment options available to control your allergies symptoms such as immunotherapy and medication, but they are not without side effects. But did you know that there is a connection between allergy medicine and weight gain? These antihistamines used for allergies cause weight gain if they are taken for a long period of time. A study done at Yale shows that antihistamines like Zyrtec and Allegra might cause you to eat more. In August 2010, researchers from Yale University published a study in the journal Obesity and found that people who took antihistamines regularly were heavier than people who did not take them at all. Histamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain which is responsible for the regulation of weight and allergies symptoms that we experience. When we take antihistamines, it blocks the histamine which can disrupt an enzyme in the brain that helps regulate food consumption. Because antihistamines disturb this neurotransmitter in the brain, you might mistake thirst for hunger. On the other hand, these antihistamines also affect your energy levels by making you feel sluggish and tired.

So what other options do the people with allergies have?

Some alternative remedies have been found to be as effective as the prescription allergy medicine without the side effects. As every person is different and your body reacts in different ways, you might have to try different remedies to find out which one is right for you. Some of the alternative remedies used for allergies are:

Butterbur

Quercetin

Stinging Nettle

Carotenoids

Omega-3 fatty acid

Nasal Irrigation like Neti

Accupuncture

Probiotics

Homeopathic remedies like Euphrasia,  for burning, itchy eyes; and Allium cepa for runny nose.
